Who is that interesting gentleman in the boots and cowboy hat?
Mr. J. Garland Warren, the beloved founder of the SAC N PAC brand, a chain of convenience stores that once covered the greater San Marcos, Kyle, Buda, and New Braunfels areas, is an important part of Centerpoint Station’s history.
Garland had a love for early American country antiques – in particular, old store fixtures and advertising. His collection was the start of what has today grown to be a very diverse and exciting shopping and dining destination with an “old general store atmosphere” – Centerpoint Station.
A bit more about Garland – he was a true believer in helping people and was looked at as a leader in the community. He was a HUGE fan of the Texas State Bobcats and was a huge supporter of their Athletic Department, and even served as the President of the San Marcos Chamber of Commerce for many years.
In a nutshell, Garland was a character, a “man’s man,” he had a kind and gentle soul and was truly one of a kind. Today, his son Blair, daughter Cheryl, and manager of 21 years, Laura Thompson, lead Centerpoint Station and ensure it carries on all the important traditions that their daddy introduced.
Centerpoint Station opened in 1993, by founders J. Garland Warren and his daughter, Cheryl Warren Cuppetilli. Garland had been for some time an antique collector of early American furniture and advertising memorabilia. The idea was born to create a place that showcased his antiques, to sell home décor, gift items, and provide a place where people could learn a little about American history.
“Not long after we opened, we realized this area was in need of a restaurant. Many customers came in expecting food but were disappointed to not find any,” explained Cheryl, when asked about how the restaurant came into play. Within its first year of business, Centerpoint Station started offering hamburgers, but Garland was not satisfied with it being just a burger. Cheryl remembers her dad saying, “It’s not just going to be a burger. It’s going to be a BIG burger, with a homemade buttered bun… you know, just a good ol’ burger.”
Once a good homemade buttered bun and burger recipe have created the crowds consistently increased over time. It didn’t take long before a reputation for “just a good ol’ burger” was established. It was soon realized that Centerpoint Station was in need of a bigger kitchen and more seating to keep up with the demand. “It was a bittersweet situation”, said Cheryl. “It was exciting to have lines out the door, but we couldn’t accommodate our customers as well as we would have liked.” 15 years ago, the train depot building from New Baden, TX was added and now seats 110 customers at a time.
